The Hanging Poster

The Hanging Poster
Pop Culture Gallery, Poznań

An exhibition dedicated to the Polish School of Poster – a movement that emerged in the mid-20th century and transformed the poster into a cultural, artistic and intellectual phenomenon. The Polish School fused painting, graphic design and metaphor into a distinctive language marked by wit, ambiguity, emotional tension and visual poetry. It rejected literal illustration and instead used symbol, colour and gesture to speak in ways the text never could. For decades it shaped the visual identity of Polish streets, cinemas, theatres and public spaces, becoming one of the most original voices in global graphic design.

This exhibition explores the moment a poster stops being paper and becomes presence. A space built around suspension: between print and object, between message and silence, between the everyday function of communication and the artistic autonomy championed by the Polish School. Here, the poster is not archived or neutralised. It hangs. It vibrates. It responds to light. It breathes with the room.

The show highlights the physicality of this tradition: the weight of the sheet, the temperament of colour, the expressive distortions, the metaphors encoded in shape rather than statement. Each work becomes a gesture suspended in air, carrying the legacy of Tomaszewski, Lenica, Świerzy, Starowieyski and their successors, yet awakening as an independent object. It hangs because that is its natural habitat. It hangs because visibility is part of its genetic code. It hangs because these posters were born for the street, and in the gallery they gain a new clarity.

The Hanging Poster is an exhibition about the poster as a condition, and about the Polish School of Poster as a living language. A reminder that its power arises in encounter, not in theory. A poster that does not reenact its past, but stands in its presence: vivid, suspended, unmistakable. At the centre of the gaze. At the centre of the gesture. At the centre of attention.
