Iris van Herpen: Alchemic Couture at Pop Culture Gallery in Poznań was the first major presentation in Poland dedicated to the Dutch designer whose work seamlessly merges haute couture, advanced technology, and interdisciplinary experimentation. Van Herpen is widely regarded as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary fashion, reshaping the boundaries between garment, sculpture, architecture, and movement.

As curator of the Polish edition, I developed the conceptual and spatial framework for the exhibition, designing a narrative that positioned van Herpen’s creations as living hybrids of craftsmanship and scientific innovation. The space of Pop Culture Gallery — rooted in the intersection of art, design, and technology — became an ideal environment for showcasing her work not merely as fashion, but as a form of material and conceptual research.

The exhibition guided visitors through van Herpen’s transformative design processes: laser cutting, 3D printing, hand-pleated structures, experimental textiles, and collaborations with architects, engineers, and choreographers. These elements revealed a world in which clothing becomes a vessel for natural forces, digital geometry, and biomimetic imagination. Each garment appeared as a sculptural gesture — dynamic, fluid, and charged with movement.

The scenography emphasised immersion and flow. Carefully choreographed pathways led audiences from intimate archival spaces to dramatic, runway-inspired displays. The garments were treated as autonomous objects with their own spatial presence, allowing viewers to experience their sculptural complexity and emotional resonance.

The exhibition received strong national attention and was highlighted by major cultural media as a significant cultural event. Critics praised the project for introducing the Polish public to one of the world’s leading innovators in fashion and for presenting couture as a field of artistic inquiry rather than solely a realm of luxury.

Iris van Herpen: Alchemic Couture positioned Pop Culture Gallery as a platform capable of hosting world-class interdisciplinary exhibitions and reaffirmed the potential of fashion to push the boundaries of art, technology, and imagination.
